How to Plan a Yacht Proposal in NYC

One moment. Done perfectly.

There is no backdrop in New York City quite like New York Harbor at golden hour. The Statue of Liberty to the south. The Brooklyn Bridge to the east. The Manhattan skyline catching fire as the sun drops behind New Jersey. For the right person, it’s the only setting that lives up to the moment.

Planning a yacht proposal in NYC sounds complicated but it doesn’t have to be. Big Apple Charters has helped over 100 couples pull off the perfect proposal on the water, and we’ve learned exactly what makes each one unforgettable. The Setting

Why New York Harbor Is the Most Romantic Proposal Setting in the City

There's a reason New York has produced more iconic proposals than almost any city on earth and it's not just the restaurants. It's the water.

From the deck of a private yacht, New York stops being a city you're inside and becomes something you experience from the outside. The skyline becomes a panorama. Lady Liberty stands in the middle distance, lit gold at dusk. The Brooklyn Bridge frames the East River behind you. Most people have lived in or visited New York for years without ever seeing it from this angle. The first time always stops people cold.

That moment of awe, the sharp intake of breath before they fully take in the view, is exactly when you ask. It's not manufactured. It's real, it's New York, and it belongs entirely to the two of you.

Big Apple Charters operates exclusively as a private charter. There are no other guests, no strangers sharing the deck. The moment is yours alone, and the crew is briefed to disappear at precisely the right time.

The Plan

Planning a Yacht Proposal in NYC: What to Decide First

Choose Your Vessel

For most proposals, the Hudson Star is the ideal choice. It accommodates up to 12 guests, enough to bring family aboard for the celebration after the question, or to keep it just the two of you with room to breathe. If you're planning a surprise involving a larger group already waiting on board, the Skyline fits up to 30 guests with a full lounge, bar, and a crew experienced in coordinating reveals.

For the most intimate experience, just the two of you and the crew, the Manhattan Mermaid offers a more private, boutique feel at a lower price point.

Pick Your Timing

Sunset departures are the most popular for proposals, and for good reason. The light on New York Harbor between 6:30 and 8:00pm in summer is unlike anything else in the city. Spring and fall offer equally beautiful conditions with fewer competing bookings. We recommend booking 3 to 4 weeks in advance for summer sunset slots, though we accommodate last-minute requests when we can.

Plan Your Add-Ons

The charter itself is the stage, but the details complete it. Champagne and florals can be arranged through our concierge add-on service. If you'd like a photographer hidden on board or positioned at a dock to capture the moment, we can coordinate that too. BYOB is always welcome if you'd prefer to bring your own wine or champagne.

What Couples Say About Their Big Apple Charters Proposal

★★★★★

We anchored right in front of Lady Liberty as the sun went down. He got down on one knee — I couldn't see straight through my tears. There is no more perfect setting in the world.

— T.M., Manhattan

★★★★★

Amal thought of everything — the champagne was chilled before we even stepped aboard, the crew disappeared at exactly the right moment, and the skyline was breathtaking. She said yes before I finished the question.

— Daniel R., New York

★★★★★

She said yes. The crew had champagne ready before she even realized what was happening. Best night of our lives — and we had the entire Manhattan skyline as a witness.

Questions Answered

Yacht Proposal NYC — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a yacht proposal in NYC cost?

A yacht proposal charter with Big Apple Charters starts at $300/hr for the Manhattan Mermaid (up to 8 guests) and $500/hr for the Hudson Star (up to 12 guests). Most proposal charters run 2–3 hours. Champagne, florals, and photography are available as add-ons. See our full pricing page for details. Many couples find the total cost comparable to a high-end NYC restaurant dinner — with a setting that's completely private and genuinely irreplaceable.

How do I keep the proposal a secret if my partner knows we're going on a boat?

We work with you to build a believable cover story — a sunset dinner cruise, a birthday celebration for a friend, or simply a surprise outing. Our crew is briefed privately and will never break the story. We've helped over 100 couples manage the logistics of a surprise, and our team is experienced at reading the room and staying out of sight until the moment calls for them.

What's the best time of year to propose on a yacht in NYC?

Late spring through early fall (May–October) offers the best conditions for a yacht proposal in New York Harbor. Summer sunset departures — typically 6:30–8:00pm — deliver the most dramatic light on the skyline and Statue of Liberty. Fall offers equally stunning views with cooler temperatures and fewer competing bookings. We operate year-round, and winter proposals on an enclosed vessel can be genuinely magical — particularly on clear, cold nights when the city lights reflect on the water.

Can I have a photographer on board for the proposal?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. We can help coordinate a photographer, either positioned on the dock to capture your arrival back at Chelsea Piers or aboard the vessel for the full experience. Alternatively, if you have a trusted photographer you'd like to bring, they're welcome aboard as part of your guest count. The crew will coordinate exact timing so the photographer is in position without tipping off your partner.

Where does the yacht depart from for a proposal charter?

All Big Apple Charters proposal charters depart from Chelsea Piers, Pier 59, in Manhattan. Parking is available nearby, and the location is easily accessible by subway, cab, or rideshare. We'll provide detailed boarding instructions after booking. The departure point is discreet enough that arriving guests won't immediately register that they're boarding a private yacht, which helps with the element of surprise.

Do you handle the champagne and flowers, or do I need to bring my own?

Both options work. BYOB is always welcome — bring your own champagne, wine, or any beverages you'd like. Florals, custom arrangements, and catering are available as concierge add-ons that we coordinate on your behalf. If you have a specific vision — a particular flower, a personalized banner, a custom arrangement — tell us and we'll make it happen. If you want to keep it simple, we handle it all.
