CHARTER INSIGHTS

Sunset Yacht Charter NYC

Golden hour on the Hudson — the most sought-after private experience in New York City.

There’s a moment every evening in New York City when the light changes and the skyline catches fire. The Hudson turns amber, the glass towers glow, and for a few minutes the whole harbor looks like something from a film. Most people see it from a rooftop or a park bench. A few people see it from a private yacht — anchored in the middle of it all, with a drink in hand and nowhere else to be.

Big Apple Charters runs private sunset yacht charters out of Chelsea Piers seven days a week. Our sunset window departures are timed to catch golden hour on the water and the city lights coming up on the return. It’s two hours that feels like a completely different world from the one you left on shore.

Whether you’re planning a date night, an anniversary, a bachelorette party, or just want to celebrate something with people you love, a sunset cruise on a private yacht is the kind of experience that stays with people. This guide covers what to expect, how to choose the right vessel, and what makes Big Apple Charters the right call for a private sunset charter in NYC.

THE EXPERIENCE

What a Private Sunset Charter in NYC Actually Looks Like

You board at Chelsea Piers — right on the Hudson, steps from the West Side Highway. Your captain and first mate greet the group, give a quick safety brief, and you’re off. The city recedes behind you as you head toward the harbor. Lower Manhattan comes into view on your right, the Statue of Liberty ahead, the Verrazano in the distance. It’s a route you’ve never experienced from water level.

The heart of the charter is golden hour — roughly the 45 minutes before and after sunset, when the light is extraordinary and every photo looks like a painting. We time our departures to put you on the water for that window. You’ll have music, drinks, your group, and one of the best views in the world. No strangers, no tour commentary, no schedule but yours.

As the sun drops below the Jersey horizon, the city lights come up. The bridges light up, the towers glow, the harbor takes on a completely different character. The return trip back to Chelsea Piers is its own kind of magic. Guests who book sunset charters almost always say the city lights on the way back were their favorite part.

Most sunset charters run two to three hours, though we can extend if you want to linger. BYOB is welcome on all vessels — bring champagne, wine, beer, or a custom cocktail setup. Catering can be arranged through = if you’d like food on board. Just tell us what you have in mind.

CHOOSING YOUR VESSEL

Which Yacht Is Right for Your Sunset Charter?

The Manhattan Mermaid — Intimate & Fun

The Manhattan Mermaid is a SeaRay 270 SDX — sporty, agile, and perfect for smaller groups of two to eight. She’s fast enough to get to the best vantage points quickly and small enough to feel intimate. For a date night, anniversary, or a tight group of friends, the Mermaid is the move. Casual, fun, and unforgettable.

For the most intimate experience, just the two of you and the crew, the Manhattan Mermaid offers a more private, boutique feel at a lower price point.

The Hudson Star — Space & Comfort

The Hudson Star is a Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS — a mid-size luxury vessel with a full cabin, spacious deck, and seating for up to 18. She’s the most popular choice for sunset celebrations: bachelorettes, birthdays, anniversaries with a bigger crew. Comfortable enough to settle in, beautiful enough to feel special.

The Skyline — The Full Experience

The Skyline is our flagship — a custom 2026 luxury event yacht with room for up to 30. If you want the full production: full bar setup, a photographer, catering, a speaker system, and space to move around and celebrate properly, this is it. The Skyline at golden hour over Lower Manhattan is a genuinely breathtaking thing to be on.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How to Make the Most of Your Sunset Charter

Timing is everything on a sunset charter — and we handle that for you. We schedule departures based on sunset time so you’re on the water for peak golden hour, not stuck boarding while the sky is already dark. Plan to arrive at Chelsea Piers 10–15 minutes before your departure to settle in and get your drinks sorted before we cast off. Dress for the water: evenings on the Hudson are almost always cooler than on shore, even in summer. A light layer goes a long way. Bring a good camera or make sure your phone is charged — you’ll want it. BYOB is fully welcome: champagne and rosé are the most popular choices, but bring whatever your group loves. If you want food on board, we can connect you with catering partners who deliver dockside before departure.

Timed to golden hour. BYOB welcome. Captain & crew included. Coolers & ice on board. Departing Chelsea Piers.

WHAT GUESTS SAY

Sunset Charters That Guests Can't Stop Talking About

★★★★★

"We did the sunset charter for our anniversary and I genuinely cannot overstate how beautiful it was. The timing was perfect — we were out there right as the sky went pink and orange, and the city behind us looked unreal. The captain was fantastic. We've done a lot of 'NYC experiences' and this is the one we talk about most."

— Claudia R., Anniversary Charter, Upper East Side

★★★★★

"Booked the Hudson Star for a bachelorette party of 12 and it was the highlight of the whole weekend. We brought rosé and snacks, the music was going, and when the sun went down over Jersey the whole group just went silent for a second — it was that good. Amal and her team made everything so easy."

— Jenna T., Bachelorette Charter, Hoboken

★★★★★

"I surprised my girlfriend with a sunset charter for her birthday and she absolutely lost it in the best way. The crew was warm, professional, and gave us complete privacy. We were anchored near the Statue of Liberty as the sun set behind the skyline. I've never seen her cry happy tears like that. 10/10, already thinking about booking again."

COMMON QUESTIONS

Sunset Yacht Charter NYC — FAQ

What time do sunset charters depart?

Departure times shift with the season to align with golden hour. In summer, we typically depart around 7:00–7:30 PM. In spring and fall, closer to 5:30–6:30 PM. We’ll confirm your exact departure window when you book and adjust if sunset times shift significantly before your date.

How long is a typical sunset charter?

Most sunset charters run two to three hours — long enough to catch the full golden hour and the city lights coming up on the way back. We can extend to four hours for groups that want to linger on the water after dark. Just let us know when you book.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We monitor conditions closely and will reach out if your date looks questionable. Overcast skies don’t necessarily cancel a sunset charter — they can actually produce dramatic light. Rain and high winds are different. If we need to reschedule for safety, we work with you to find the next available date at no penalty.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Yes — BYOB is welcome on all vessels. Bring whatever your group loves: champagne, wine, cocktails, beer, charcuterie, whatever. We provide coolers and ice. If you’d rather not bring food, we can connect you with catering partners who deliver directly to the dock before departure.

How many people can come on a sunset charter?

Groups of 2 to 30, depending on the vessel. The Manhattan Mermaid fits up to 8, the Hudson Star up to 18, and the Skyline accommodates up to 30 guests. All are fully private — your group has the entire boat. We’ll help you choose the right vessel for your group size and vibe.

Is a sunset charter good for a date or proposal?

It’s one of the most popular proposal settings we offer — for good reason. The combination of golden hour light, privacy, skyline backdrop, and a captain who knows the plan makes it genuinely magical. For date nights, it’s an upgrade from any restaurant in the city. Tell us what you’re planning and we’ll make it work.
